Part Two: Are drug makers experimenting with your kids?
The AP reported that foster kids in Colorado, Texas, Illinois, Maryland, New York and North Carolina were given powerful drugs for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, without any of the protections which should have been afforded them under the law. This was a federally-funded study that continued for twenty years.
Infants and teenagers infected with HIV and AIDS in the foster-care system were given powerful antiviral and other drugs meant to suppress and treat the AIDS virus.
Here is the problem: not only were the children not allowed to object, they were given absolutely none of the protections under the law that are required for clinical trials in humans, nor the special consideration that they were children. Some studies reported that the drugs had little benefit in children.
Some studies reported that the higher the dosage of these medications given to the children, the higher the mortality rate from the disease as well as the side effects of the drugs.
Big Pharma continues to circumvent the legal and ethical protections offered by the law and mandated by the FDA. Every person has value. There is no excuse for ever using one of the most helpless groups - foster children- as guinea pigs for testing dangerous drugs.
Our next question should be: How do we stop these egregious abuses by the pharmaceutical companies? All they care about is their bottom line and they market products to consumers without regard for safety. The latest headlines highlight how companies and states are taking action against these companies by filing lawsuits.
DePuy lawsuits – Hip implant recall causes pain, suffering and even the need for revision surgery.
Risperdal lawsuits– Johnson and Johnson sued over improper marketing and marketing for off-label use.
